Which McCombs major should I choose?

You apply to McCombs as Unspecified Business and choose a business major after enrolling, so your first choice is the college’s admission route before it’s a final major declaration. The majors lead to different course sequences and career preparation. Use the degree plan for your catalog year to compare required classes, electives, and prerequisites before building a schedule.

Do I apply straight to Finance or MIS?

No. Select Unspecified Business when you apply to McCombs. You choose the specific business major after enrolling.

If you’re already at UT and want to move into McCombs, use the internal-transfer guide. Applying from another college uses UT’s external-transfer process.

Which Business Analytics course numbers do I use?

For the 2026–28 plan, the checklist names the five classes below. The department overview still shows two older course numbers, so bring your catalog year to advising before copying a list.

Five classes on the 2026–28 checklist

Scroll the table to compare every column.

CourseClassHours
BAX 304Introduction to Problem Solving and Programming3
BAX 325Database Management3
BAX 357Predictive Analytics3
BAX 358Optimization Methods and Decision Making3
BAX 375Business Analytics in Practice3

You can earn credit for only one of BAX 304, BAX 305 and MIS 304. Taking all three won’t give you nine hours toward the degree.

BAX 358 also needs the listed statistics and decision-sciences prerequisites and upper-division standing. The checklist calls BAX 375 spring-only; check the current Course Schedule when planning your final year.

Canfield and the five-year accounting program

Canfield Business Honors has its own application and honors classes. A place in the BBA doesn’t include a place in honors.

Integrated MPA combines bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a five-year accounting program. Check its entry requirements before treating it like another standard BBA major.

What should I take to advising?

  1. Your major and catalog year.
  2. A fresh degree audit showing where your credits count.
  3. The prerequisite for each class you want next semester.
  4. A backup section and any class offered only once a year.
  5. Your registration time from RIS.

Choose the major for the work you want to learn, then check whether its classes fit your credits and graduation plan.

Questions

Can I choose my business major before enrolling?

Applicants select Unspecified Business. Enrolled McCombs students then select a specific major; honors and combined programs have extra requirements.

Should I use the newest degree plan?

Use the plan for your catalog year. If an older webpage and your plan disagree, ask your adviser which classes count for you.

How we got this

Program names, plans and course requirements were checked on the official McCombs, Admissions and catalog pages on October 27, 2026. The list includes eight BBA majors plus Canfield Business Honors and integrated MPA.

The Business Analytics checklist and overview disagree on two course numbers. The checklist calls itself unofficial and directs students to IDA, advising, the catalog and the Course Schedule. We haven’t treated the old and new numbers as interchangeable.
