UT Austin earnings by major: pay and debt

For 2020–2024 UT graduates working in Texas, first-year median pay was $112,200 for Computer Science BSCS and $43,200 for English BA, in 2025 dollars.

Research cutoff: . Prices, budgets and results keep their own dates.

In this investigation

For 2020–2024 UT graduates working in Texas, seekUT’s first-year medians were $112,200 for Computer Science BSCS and $43,200 for English BA, in 2025 dollars. I’d use those degree-specific figures to compare careers, then plan around the range of pay and the loans you’ll actually need.

Those figures describe graduates working in Texas. A national federal table groups several UT degrees together and follows older classes. Both help, as long as you keep the degree, graduating class, and earnings year attached to the number.

What graduates earn in Texas

The seekUT Texas workbook separates degrees that national tables combine. Computer Science BSA graduates have first-year median earnings of $102,300; BSCS graduates have $112,200. Its BA row has a blank first-year figure. A blank stays unknown.

I’d start here if you expect to work in Texas. The national comparison later in the article includes graduates working elsewhere in the country.

Earnings and debt above are in 2025 dollars under seekUT’s Texas definitions. The latest undergraduate group is 2020–2024. The workbook labels the other columns five and ten years after graduation without dating those graduating groups; keep each graduating group apart. Debt covers borrowers who started at UT as first-time college students and loans taken while attending UT System institutions. It excludes Parent PLUS and borrowing at other institutions.

The Electrical and Computer Engineering BSECE label has a first-year figure, while Electrical Engineering BSEE has a longer series. Combining their names would silently fill a missing ten-year result. The complete download keeps both.

The middle of a major still covers a wide range of pay

For Computer Science BSCS graduates working in Texas, the middle half earned between $91,800 and $144,500 in their first year. That is a $52,700 span within one degree label.

First-year earnings for seven UT bachelor programs working in Texas. Lines show the middle 50% of pay, and dots show medians; 2020–2024 graduates, 2025 dollars. Exact quartiles and worker counts are in the data download.

That variation matters when you plan a loan payment or sign a lease. I’d compare the lower quartile as well as the median. A median salary leaves half the measured workers below it.

The claim that variation within a major exceeds differences between majors needs a more careful test. I compared the middle-half spread inside each program with the middle-half spread of program medians. Every program gets one vote; large majors don’t get extra weight. Seven Texas program-and-degree names have two reported first-year results under different historical codes. I excluded those names from this comparison, keeping each remaining program’s one vote.

The Texas program comparison supports the claim. The broader national-field comparison reverses it. Neither result says major choice is irrelevant: the highest and lowest national first-year field medians are $100,867 apart. Grouping programs differently changes the comparison, and none of these differences isolates what changing your major would do to your own pay.

The Census PSEO download supplies the national quartiles. These ranges describe graduates’ different earnings; they are not margins of error around a salary forecast.

National earnings follow different graduating classes

Computer and information sciences has national median first-year earnings of $130,966. That four-digit federal field groups UT’s computer-science degree variants. A national BSCS-only result is unavailable in that table.

Biology$35,414$67,509$111,779
Music$48,878$60,004$70,441

The years in the column headings are graduation years. The newest one-year, five-year, and ten-year results follow different people. For a same-class comparison, the data download also follows the 2010–2012 group at all three points, where 54 fields have a reported figure at every point.

National earnings come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes program, release R2026Q2. PSEO excludes graduates below its annual earnings floor or with two or more quarters that show no earnings in the administrative data. It also misses self-employment and some other work. The figures describe graduates meeting those filters. They leave other graduates’ earnings unknown.

There is a dollar-year inconsistency in seekUT’s public sources. Its general help page says 2025 dollars, but its national workbook matches the Census 2023-dollar medians to rounding: all 186 paired figures differ by at most $49. The national table here keeps the Census figures and their documented 2023 dollar basis.

Debt belongs beside the share who borrowed

Only 23.8% of the first-time college entrants in seekUT’s Computer Science BSCS debt group borrowed. Their median debt was $22,100. English BA had a higher borrower share, 49.9%, and a borrower median of $24,600.

English - BA49.9%$24,6007%
Nursing - BSN46%$26,0003.8%
Music Performance - BM44.1%$32,20012.6%

The repayment percentages are seekUT’s published estimates using a ten-year fixed repayment schedule and borrowers’ gross monthly earnings. They use the borrower earnings comparison behind that measure, so dividing the two standalone medians in the earlier table will not necessarily reproduce them. They describe a standard repayment estimate before living costs and taxes; your loan terms and repayment plan determine your payment.

The Texas workbook reports debt for 129 of its 174 entries keyed by program code and degree. Borrower medians run from $14,400 to $33,800. Blank rows leave the debt amount unknown.

The federal College Scorecard field-of-study file answers a different borrowing question. Its latest debt group graduated in academic years 2022–23 and 2023–24. Its “any institution” measure includes federal undergraduate loans from prior institutions; it excludes private and state loans, Perkins loans, and accrued interest. Parent PLUS has its own measure. Of 86 UT bachelor fields in the October 15, 2026 file, 64 have a reported federal borrower median and 22 are privacy-suppressed.

For nursing, Scorecard’s federal borrower median is $14,003; seekUT’s Texas BSN borrower median is $26,000. Those are different students, periods, loan definitions, and dollar bases. The gap cannot tell you how much extra a particular nursing student borrowed. Use the figures to understand the questions to ask about your aid offer, then use your own amounts in the federal loan simulator.

Starting-salary surveys leave out some outcomes

The McCombs 2024–2025 BBA salary survey reports a mean base salary of $89,377 and a median of $85,000. Its major table also shows how many job acceptances had a salary attached.

Salary reporting among known McCombs job acceptances
McCombs majorReported job acceptancesReported salarySalary reports / acceptancesMean base salary
Finance40733983.3%$92,315
Marketing684870.6%$66,542
Supply chain management191263.2%$76,917

Those fractions count only known acceptances. They give no salary-reporting rate for all graduates or for everyone who answered the survey. Canfield honors students can appear in both honors and another business major, so the honors and major rows cannot be added into a graduate total. The table gives useful starting-offer information, but the unreported salaries prevent measuring the direction or size of salary-reporting bias from these rows alone.

The Cockrell salary page, updated May 22, 2025, lists average base pay for positions offered upon graduation. Its overall bachelor figure is $88,141. The page does not state the graduating class or the salary-reporting share beside those major figures. An offer-based mean and a calendar-year earnings median measure different outcomes, even before geography and later study enter the comparison.

I’d use these surveys for recruiting and offer comparisons. For a longer view, use the administrative earnings figures with their graduating classes and work filters.

Texas employers account for most measured employment

Census assigns 15,415 of its 19,742 first-year employment-flow total to Texas employers for UT bachelor graduates of 2019–2021. That is 78.1% of the weighted employment total, with 21.9% assigned elsewhere. When a graduate works in multiple states or industries, Census splits the count by each job’s share of their earnings. These figures measure employer locations, rather than how many individual graduates moved.

National employment flows one year after graduation
Employer location or industryEarnings-weighted employment countShare of 19,742 weighted total
Texas15,41578.1%
Pacific division1,5417.8%
Middle Atlantic division9404.8%
Professional, scientific, and technical services5,09025.8%
Educational services2,29011.6%
Health care and social assistance2,08610.6%

Location and industry describe the weighted employment in two ways. The PSEO flows file locates employers and classifies industries. It does not identify where graduates live or their job duties. Working for a health-care employer does not establish that someone has a clinical occupation.

The matching work filters also matter. A graduate without qualifying employment in the data may be studying, self-employed, abroad, out of work, or below the earnings threshold. The unobserved group cannot be read as an unemployment rate. Released counts and earnings use confidentiality protection, so tiny differences deserve little weight.

What each source can answer

These figures have been public for years. UT launched seekUT in 2014, and its national Census collaboration began in 2018. The useful addition here is a current degree lookup, a check of the downloadable numbers, and the spread of pay beside the medians.

The Scorecard October 2026 documentation and cohort dictionary define the current field-level data. The field earnings series includes completers. Older articles describing Scorecard as one university-wide figure that mixes graduates and nongraduates describe a different measure and an earlier version of the product.

Every program and code in the Texas download

The table below preserves all 174 entries keyed by program code and degree in the public seekUT Texas download, including historical codes and labels. The code matters: Nutrition BSA has two first-year results, $42,800 and $34,200, under different codes. Keeping the code visible prevents choosing one figure without explaining which group it describes.

The current 2026–2028 UT degree catalog lists 127 bachelor program rows. Expanding degree options and removing repeated joint listings produces 142 program-and-degree choices. The name-and-degree lookup gives 115 with one historical code candidate, nine with multiple candidates, and 18 with no matched label. Two single-code cases match the name while the degree abbreviation still needs checking. The data download includes every choice and its match status. Current official CIP assignments could not be confirmed from the state inventory, so these links remain historical candidates.

Use the current UT major directory for today’s degree options. A newly offered degree may share a federal field with older degrees without having a ten-year graduate history of its own.

All amounts below use the Texas definitions given above. “Not reported” means no figure in the workbook. The current and historical labels are not an admissions list.

How we got this

The investigation uses public seekUT exports, Census PSEO release R2026Q2, the October 15, 2026 College Scorecard field file, current UT catalog listings and school salary surveys, checked November 1, 2026. Source periods, money bases, work filters and missing results are stated beside the comparisons. The data download preserves the full tables, definitions, source hashes and reproducible calculations.

A current catalog choice can have one historical code candidate, several candidates or no matched earnings label. The lookup keeps those states visible. Current official code assignments remain unconfirmed where the state inventory could not be retrieved.
