When and how do I register for Spring 2027 classes at UT?
Spring 2027 registration runs in three periods: November 2–13, December 14–18, and January 7–10. Your own access time and holds are on your RIS. Undergraduates who register in November or December pay or confirm attendance by 5 p.m. on January 5, 2027.
In this guide
What are the Spring 2027 registration dates?
Your access time inside each period is on your RIS. Period 1 opens November 2 for graduate students and November 3 for undergraduates, whose times depend on progress toward their degree. Graduate and law students pay by 5 p.m. on January 14 instead of January 5.
If you don’t pay or confirm attendance by your deadline, UT cancels your registered and waitlisted classes. Every 2026–27 date is on our academic calendar, and our What I Owe guide covers the bill.

How do I register for classes at UT?
Most of the work happens before your window opens.
- Open UT’s current Course Schedule and choose sections, meeting times and backups.
- Open RIS to find your access time and holds, then complete required advising and clear the holds shown there.
- When your window opens, use UT’s registration system to add each section by its unique number.
- Review the resulting schedule, then finish payment or attendance confirmation on My Tuition Bill.

What do you need to do for registration?
How do I build my class schedule?
Use the degree plan for requirements and the current Course Schedule for offered sections.
- Complete required advising and check the remaining degree requirements.
- Write down unique numbers, meeting times and backups.
- Read prerequisites and credit exclusions before adding classes.
Where is my registration time or hold?
RIS gives your own access times and holds. A public date range doesn’t replace it.
- Open RIS for the correct semester.
- Read your assigned times and the holds listed.
- Complete the instructions from the office responsible for a hold.
What do I do when my window opens?
Use the official registration system and the section’s unique number.
- Check the section’s current time and restrictions.
- Add it during your assigned access time.
- Review the resulting schedule to see what enrolled.
How do I check a waitlist or swap?
A swap class is the class you agree to drop when the waitlisted class opens.
- Check whether the department has enabled the waitlist.
- Confirm the swap class and what would be dropped.
- Monitor the result and update the swap after schedule changes.
How do I finish tuition or attendance confirmation?
Adding classes is followed by the payment or confirmation step on My Tuition Bill.
- Read your own bill’s deadline.
- Use the payment, aid or zero-bill option that applies.
- Check the registration-complete message afterward.
Will both courses count?
M 408K and M 408Q each have four hours, but the catalog allows credit for only one course from their listed calculus group. Taking both won’t automatically give you eight hours toward your degree.
Scroll the table to compare every column.
| Course | Hours | Credit rule |
|---|---|---|
| M 408K | 4 | Only one course from the catalog’s listed group may count |
| M 408Q | 4 | In the same only-one-counted group |
A required seat matters more than the average class
The share of counted UT undergraduate sections with at least 100 students fell from 10.5% in 2011 to 7.3% in 2025. Required labs, prerequisites and time slots can remain full while fewer counted sections are very large.
Keep the class that advances your degree and a workable backup on your registration plan. The growth and class-access investigation explains the totals, and the introductory teaching article shows why the whole teaching team matters.
What do I enter to add the class?
Use the section’s unique number, not just the course name. Review the resulting schedule for meeting times and linked labs or discussions.
If an add fails, read the reason. A closed class, reserved seat, prerequisite and time conflict need different fixes. Keep your backup until you know the replacement is enrolled.
Register by hand. UT bans automated tools for adding or dropping classes, and using one can bar you from online registration.
How does the UT waitlist work?
When a class is full, you can join its waitlist if the department has turned one on and you’re already registered for at least one class. You can join up to two lists per course and be on four lists at once.
A swap class is a class on your schedule that UT drops if you get the waitlisted seat. One Stop’s example: you want BIO 340L, so you add BIO 455L and list it as the swap. If you drop the swap class yourself without updating the waitlist, you won’t be added. See My Waitlists shows your place on each list.
When do waitlists close for Spring 2027?
Waitlists run from the first day of registration through the sixth class day, which is January 19, 2027, for spring. Summer lists close on the second class day.
After that, adding a class needs the department’s approval. An instructor agreeing to talk about a seat doesn’t add the class to your schedule.
How do I know registration is complete?
Pay tuition, pay with financial aid, or confirm attendance if your bill is zero, all on My Tuition Bill. You’re done when the bill says, in green, “Your registration is complete and your courses are secured.”
Check that message even if someone else is paying your bill. After a waitlist move or a change in hours, check your schedule and bill again.

How we got this
Registration periods, pay-by dates and late fees come from the Registrar’s Spring 2027 “When to register” pages and the 2026–27 academic calendar. Waitlist rules come from One Stop’s add/drop page. All were checked November 4, 2026.
The calculus example comes from the current catalog. Catalog descriptions don’t show current seats, so use the Course Schedule and your own degree plan.
