How do I get home from UT Austin at night?

Sure Walk runs 8 p.m.–2 a.m.; UT Night Rides runs 11 p.m.–4 a.m. Both pick up on campus; check the destination areas and holiday closures before you leave.

Which service can take me home?

For immediate danger, call 911. For a planned trip, choose the service by your pickup, destination and time:

ServiceCurrent hoursWhere it can take you
Sure Walk8 p.m.–2 a.m.; seven nights except closuresCampus-origin walks or cart/car rides, depending on the service area; campus or eligible off-campus destinations
UT Night Rides11 p.m.–4 a.m.; seven nightsLyft from Main Campus, Pickle Research Campus or Dell Pediatric Research Institute to a home in the eligible area

Sure Walk excludes holidays and university and residence hall closures. Check the current service map and notices before requesting a trip.

How do I request Sure Walk?

Call 512-232-9255 or use the request link on UT’s walking page. Two Sure Walkers may accompany you on foot or provide a cart or car ride, depending on the area.

Give your campus pickup and destination. Sure Walk can take you to West Campus or another eligible destination, but a trip starting off campus needs a different plan.

How do I get the free UT Lyft ride?

Follow the UT Night Rides setup before you need to leave. Your Lyft email must match your official UT directory email; use the activation message, or enter UTAUSTINRIDES under Payment → Lyft Pass and complete verification.

  1. Open Lyft in Personal mode.
  2. Choose the Standard ride and an eligible campus pickup.
  3. Enter your home inside the eligible drop-off area.
  4. Check that the fare quote says FREE before requesting the ride.

What could make the Lyft ride cost money?

UT’s Night Rides rules warn that upgrades, Business mode and added stops cancel the credit. Monthly credits are limited, and UT doesn’t cover tips, cancellation charges, fees or PrimeTime upcharges.

If the quote doesn’t say FREE, pause before requesting. Check the pickup and home zones, ride type and credits; don’t assume a UT email makes every late-night ride free.

What if I’m already in West Campus?

UT lists the West Campus Ambassadors hotline, 512-429-3278, for neighborhood assistance. Ask what help is available for your location. The campus-origin rules above mean neither Sure Walk nor UT Night Rides is a general ride from a West Campus apartment to campus.

Choose your return trip before you leave. If you’re in immediate danger, call 911 instead of waiting for a transport request.

Your late route needs more than a neighborhood average

During 2020–2024, the defined West Campus area had more APD theft, burglary and auto-theft reports per resident than Austin overall, and fewer in four selected serious categories: murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. The rates describe reported crime across the area; your exact journey needs its own plan.

The safety investigation explains the geographic choices, missing agency coverage and a map-timestamp problem. Use the ride’s pickup rules and your exact entrance when choosing a late trip.

How we got this

Hours and service areas come from the UT Parking & Transportation pages. UT’s general safety directory supplies emergency and Ambassador contacts; transport availability must be checked when you travel. Checked October 28, 2026. This is an independent undergraduate guide, not a decision on your own eligibility.
