What happens if I Q-drop a class at UT?
In an example of four 3-hour classes, Q-dropping an F alongside three B’s raises semester GPA from 2.25 to 3.00. It also leaves only nine hours, below UT’s 12-hour undergraduate full-time line; the fall 2026 academic deadline is November 18.

When is the deadline?
Use your college’s instructions and the deadline for the right term. An approved nonacademic drop is a different process from an ordinary academic drop.

| Term | Regular academic deadline | Last class day for approved nonacademic drops |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2026 | November 18, 2026 | December 7, 2026 |
| Spring 2027 | April 14, 2027 | April 26, 2027 |
Which process do I use?
Use the academic Q-drop process for reasons such as course difficulty or a class you no longer need. It opens on the 13th class day in fall/spring or the fifth in summer.
For documented nonacademic circumstances, speak with your adviser. If you want to leave every class, ask about withdrawal instead of using an individual academic Q-drop.
Will a Q hurt my GPA?
A Q is excluded from undergraduate University GPA. In the example above, three B’s give 27 grade points; 27 ÷ 12 is 2.25 with the F, while 27 ÷ 9 is 3.00 after an approved Q.
The lost hours can still affect aid, international enrollment, veterans benefits or athletics. Check the rule that applies to you before submitting. You also lose the course credit.
How many Q-drops can I use?
For students who first entered a Texas public college in fall 2007 or later, the catalog sets a six-academic-drop limit. Qualifying nonacademic drops don’t count toward it. Ask your adviser about your count.
The One-Time Exception can permit one later course drop or withdrawal, subject to approval. It’s available once in an undergraduate career; a course drop counts toward six, and it can’t add another drop after that limit. The completed request is due to the dean by the last class day.
How do I know the drop is approved?
Save the initial receipt, then read the approval or denial and check that your classes and hours changed correctly. Track the request in My Documents.
One Stop warns that a submitted request can’t be reversed or changed. Ask about uncertainty before submitting.
Scroll the table to compare every column.
| When | Check |
|---|---|
| Before submitting | Route, deadline, degree impact and any aid/enrollment rules |
| Receipt | The system received the request |
| Decision | Approval or denial |
| Afterward | The course change and remaining hours |
What does this change for next semester?
If the class is a prerequisite, find the next class it blocks and when both are offered again. An improved semester GPA and a delayed prerequisite can both be true.
If your scholarship needs 12 hours, check that before you Q-drop. The better GPA can cost you the scholarship.
Questions
Does a Q count as an F?
No. It stays on the transcript, but the course is excluded from undergraduate University GPA.
Is submitting the request enough?
No. Read the approval or denial and check the resulting schedule.
Does the One-Time Exception give me a second routine deadline?
No. It has conditions, needs approval and can be used once in an undergraduate career.
How we got this
The deadlines come from the Registrar’s 2026–27 calendar and the process from One Stop and the undergraduate catalog, checked October 26–27, 2026. Calendar deadlines use Central Time; summer and graduate rules differ.
The grades are an invented example, not a student’s result or an approval prediction. A Q stays on the transcript. Refunds, aid and enrollment conditions need their own checks.
