How do I get UT’s business minor?
The Business Foundations Minor is 18 hours for non-business majors. Apply, have the minor attached to your degree, and choose courses using your catalog year; completing a checklist without the prerequisites can delay the next class.

Which course list should I use?
Use the catalog year for your degree. The McCombs webpage still has 2024–26 and older application tabs, while the 2026–28 catalog gives a broader set of course options.
Don’t mix an older substitution rule with the newest menu without advising approval.
What are the 2026–28 choices?
Choose within each requirement rather than taking every course listed. Check the actual section’s restrictions.
Scroll the table to compare every column.
| Subject | Course options | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting | ACC 310F or ACC 311; also an ACC 311/312 sequence | ACC 311 alone may not meet FIN 320F preparation |
| Information systems / analytics | MIS 302F or equivalent; BAX 320F | Approved equivalents |
| Finance | FIN 320F or FIN 357 | Accounting and completed hours |
| Management | MAN 320F, O M 320F or MAN 336 | MAN 336’s summer route for non-business majors |
| Business law | LEB 320F or LEB 323 | Section restrictions |
| Marketing | MKT 320F or MKT 337 | MKT 337’s summer route for non-business majors |
Why might ACC 311 not be enough for finance?
FIN 320F requires 45 semester hours and one of its accounting routes: ACC 310F; ACC 311/311H together with ACC 312/312H; or six accounting hours. It is for non-McCombs majors.
So ACC 311 can appear in the minor’s accounting choices while leaving the finance prerequisite unfinished. Check both rules before planning your next semester.
How much must I take at UT?
University policy requires at least half the minor in residence and at least nine hours not also used for major requirements. General-education requirements can overlap under that policy.
McCombs calls for letter grades, at least a combined 2.00 GPA and nine hours at UT or through its Summer Institute. Transfer, exam and University Extension credit don’t count toward that residence requirement.
How does the minor get added to my degree?
Apply through the Registrar’s Document Submissions process. After acceptance, ask your academic adviser to attach the minor to your degree profile, then run a new audit.
The minor appears as an awarded credential with degree completion. Until then, describe it as in progress.
Is it the right amount of business coursework for me?
Pick the courses for something you want to learn, then compare the time and prerequisites with other classes you’d give up.
The catalog allows the Business Foundations Minor or Elements of Business Certificate, not both. Neither is admission to the BBA.
Questions
Do I need to apply for the minor?
Yes. After acceptance, ask your adviser to attach it to your degree profile.
Are all 18 hours automatically available to non-business majors?
No. Check prerequisites, term restrictions and the section you want.
Can I earn both the minor and Elements of Business Certificate?
The current catalog says you may pursue one or the other, not both.
How we got this
Requirements come from the 2026–28 catalog, McCombs’ minor page and university minor policy, checked October 26, 2026. The course menu is condensed; your catalog, approved plan and degree audit control.
ACC 312, FIN 357, MAN 336 and MKT 337 are restricted to business majors in fall and spring under the cited catalog; non-business students may access the summer route. An option on the list doesn’t reserve a seat.
