How do I claim AP credit at UT?
Choose the UT course your exam score supports, confirm it fits your degree, then submit the credit petition. The petition costs $10 per selected credit hour, so three hours cost $30 and six cost $60. Dual credit follows UT’s transfer-credit rules: a course needs at least a C− to transfer, so a B clears that bar. Admissions decides whether the course transfers, and your program decides where it fits.
In this guide
Which step am I on?
Sending a score doesn’t automatically add course credit to your transcript. Check the score, choose the course, petition, then check that it posted.
What do you need to do with your AP credit?
Why is the score I sent missing?
A missing display can be a matching problem rather than a score problem.
- Check the exam, sending confirmation and UT EID used.
- Read Testing Services’ missing-score instructions.
- Ask the office to resolve the match before paying for another test.
Which UT course does my score support?
Use the exact exam and score band, then choose the course that fits your degree.
- Find the official exam page and score band.
- Keep a list of alternatives as choices, not courses to claim together.
- Ask advising which option fits your requirements and prerequisites.
How do I petition for the course I chose?
Check the selected credit hours before creating the petition charge.
- Confirm the course and how it fits the degree.
- Read the online petition and fee instructions.
- If you decide to proceed, use UT’s own petition and payment process.
Why isn’t my petition on the transcript yet?
Posting follows UT’s reporting schedule after you choose the credit.
- Check the petition status and whether you have begun UT classes.
- Read the weekly posting schedule and holiday exceptions.
- Run a new degree audit after the credit appears.
What if I selected credit I don’t want?
Contact Testing Services promptly; posted credit is treated as permanent.
- Tell the office which petition you want to change.
- Ask whether it has already been sent for transcript posting.
- Don’t assume posted credit can be removed or claim more credit to fix it.
What does my score earn?
Use the exact exam and score band. Some exams change courses at higher scores, and some give a choice rather than several courses to claim together.
Scroll the table to compare every column.
| Exam | Score | UT course |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science A | 3 | C S 302 |
| Computer Science A | 4–5 | C S 312 |
| English Language and Composition | 3–5 | RHE 306 |
| Calculus AB | 3–4 | M 408K or M 408N or M 408R |
| Calculus AB | 5 | M 408C |
Which course should I choose?
Start with the requirement you need to fill. Ask your adviser which calculus sequence or course option fits your major and later prerequisites.
The biggest possible credit total can be the wrong choice. Check the degree audit before paying for credit you don’t need.
My score is missing. What should I do?
Check the exam, sending confirmation and the UT details used to match it. A name difference or an older EID can cause a matching problem.
Ask Testing Services to resolve that before assuming the score was too low or paying for another exam.
What happens when I petition?
Review the course and credit hours before submitting. The $10-per-hour fee is due within 14 days.
UT treats credit written to the transcript as permanent. If you selected credit you don’t want, contact Testing Services promptly and ask whether it has already been sent for posting.
When will the credit appear, and does it affect GPA?
Exam credit is CR, not an A, and doesn’t count as hours taken at UT. It doesn’t increase undergraduate GPA.
Entering students shouldn’t expect it on the transcript before classes begin. Current students should check the weekly processing schedule and then run a fresh degree audit after it posts.
Questions
Which course does my score earn?
Check that exact exam and score band in UT’s search, then choose an option that fits your degree.
Does sending the score automatically post credit?
No. You must petition for the selected course credit.
What does the petition cost?
$10 per selected credit hour, due within 14 days. Three hours are $30; six are $60, before any separate test or score-sending costs.
Does exam credit count as UT hours or an A in GPA?
No. It is CR credit and doesn’t count as credit taken at UT.
When will petitioned credit appear?
Entering students wait until classes begin. Current/former students follow the weekly reporting and next-workday posting process, with holiday exceptions.
Can I remove it after it posts?
UT treats credit written to the transcript as permanent. Contact Testing Services immediately about an unwanted petition.
How we got this
Course choices, timing and fees come from Student Testing Services, checked October 27, 2026. Its search says AP scores of at least 3 can earn at least one course except Comparative Government, Research and Seminar, which have no matching undergraduate course.
Calculus AB’s alternatives stay as alternatives. The petition fee is separate from test registration, taking a test or sending scores; a UT-administered test fee shouldn’t be added automatically to an AP claim.
